UDCE served as Civil Engineer for the MLK Jr. Way improvements master plan and then led the design team through the preparation of construction documents including field survey, civil engineering, landscape architecture, and electrical engineering for street lights. Master planning included base mapping and planning-level opportunity/ constraints/ prioritization to identify six development areas along MLK Jr. Way.

Streetscape improvements from 32nd to 35th St. included construction of bulbouts; sidewalk, curbs, gutters and ADA ramps; installation of pedestrian lights, bike racks, and benches; modification of traffic signals at 34th St intersection; landscaping including tree planting, grinding and overlay; new storm drain, drainage connectors and drainage inlets; bus stop relocation and striping. The project also includes restriping Martin Luther King Jr. Way from West Grand Ave to 40th St to change lane configuration from 4 through lanes to 2 through lanes with a turning lane, and adding Class II bicycle lanes on both sides of the street.

Oakland Public Works
